Deathcell: Magenta Guest Review

This review was kindly provided by Tabitha Kell on behalf of Parks, Scares and Glitter On a cold Friday evening, I ventured into an unknown location in Hackney Wick to experience Deathcell: Magenta, the prequel to R Spaces Production's Deathcell back in 2018. We were invited to preview a new horror movie called Magenta and as we arrived we were given our video store cards and invited in to sit and watch the movie. As we sat in the room watching the movie, we were drawn into the world of Magenta, how she became the brains behind the games in Deathcell, how Ryan managed to recruit Magenta and them to work together. The film was very intriguing and had some lovely references to Deathcell from back in 2018 but I felt that the film was a bit long and could have been cut down as I wanted to get into the experience as I knew we would be the next lot of victims to go through Magentas games.

When the film had finished and our door had been revealed, quite magnificently I might add, we were then instructed by a silent fly to enter into the first room one by one and it was at this point the escape room started and we came face to face with Magenta herself. Magenta was always behind a clear Perspex glass box room, watching us and shouting clues at us when we looked as if we were stuck, which did happen many times, also letting us know how much time we had left in that room and we also had the fly in the room silently point at stuff if they thought it would help. At one point, we all had to work together to rescue one of our group members from a fridge, which if it was down to me, probably would have left them in there.

In the third room, there was a nice throwback to Deathcell with the white jumpsuits we were required to wear before crawling through the dark tunnel (as the victims in Deathcell were all wearing the white jumpsuits). The fly in this room was very kind in throwing my jumpsuit onto my head before I got the chance to grab it to put it on. Once in the black tunnel with only glow sticks to light our way, we had to find more numbers to unlock the door and make our way into the final room. Also there was a very good jump scare in this tunnel which managed to make most of the group jump but made me laugh.

In the final room, we had to find pieces to make up a puzzle before the erratic fly became loose; this was the only room we failed and we ended up being rushed out into the first room we were in to watch the film. It was also at this point we came face to face with Magenta herself and Ryan, the brain behind Deathcell. After a few of us were insulted by Ryan, we became enthralled by the conflict between these two characters and the birth of Deathcell before our experience came to an end.

Overall this was a very enjoyable experience combining film, escape rooms and immersive theatre. The set and theming were amazing; you could tell they had put hours into all the small little details to immerse us into this world. I found the puzzles easier in this experience to figure out than I did in Deathcell and it was nice that we were all getting the same sort of experience (unless you got locked in the fridge) but what fell flat for me is that I was expecting to feel the same fear I had when I went through Deathcell back in 2018. I was expecting the flies to be manhandling me to go places (like they did back in 2018), I was expecting a bit more of the immersive theatre part which unfortunately wasn’t there, it was very escape room heavy which was enjoyable but I did come out wanting more of the immersive theatre, being manhandled and not so much of the escape room part. I would still recommend this experience but it is a lot tame than I was expecting especially compared to their first production. I look forward to seeing what R Space Productions do next.

We'd like to say a big thank you to Tabitha for writing this review and all thoughts are her own personal opinion.
